Umaiyahl Nageswaran

Lawyer

Biography

Umaiyahl Nageswaran’s burgeoning legal practice involves an eclectic mix of civil litigation, constitutional law, class actions, and labour law in the construction industry. She proudly hails from Scarborough, which she credits as the source of her passion for social justice and commitment to the furtherance of workers’ rights. Regardless of the forum, Umaiyahl endeavours to use her legal toolkit for the betterment of others.

Umaiyahl received her J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, where the highlight of her studies was the 8 months she spent in the Workers’ Rights Division at Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS). At PCLS, Umaiyahl supported and represented non-unionized workers in a variety of matters, including wrongful dismissals, wage theft, and workplace harassment and discrimination. She also volunteered with the Worker’s Action Center, where she helped workers file claims against employers who violated the Employment Standards Act. Before heading to law school, Umaiyahl earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of British Columbia, where she majored in History and minored in Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice as a Sabourin Loran Scholar.

Umaiyahl returned as an associate after summering and articling with the firm. Outside the office, you can catch Umaiyahl watching movies or playing whatever sport is in season … that is, if she’s not recovering from her latest intramural injury.
