Biography
Emily Denomme (they/them) once worked at a car factory that required them to push a button every minute to confirm they were still alive. Having worked overnight shifts in a safety-sensitive environment, Emily understands the impact workplace protections can make both in an employee’s day-to day-life and overall dignity. That’s why they are committed to enhancing and supporting worker’s rights, whether it is through fighting unscrupulous employers at the Labour Board on behalf of construction industry unions, or taking employers before arbitrators and the Pay Equity Tribunal to ensure that pay equity is maintained in hospitals, nursing homes, schools and universities. Emily also represents employees and unions in human rights cases, advocating resolutely for dignity and equity in the workplace.
After years puzzling through Shakespeare in graduate school, Emily easily holds complicated facts in their mind and can streamline those facts into compelling legal arguments. They now use these skills to untangle long bargaining histories and complex pay equity schemes, and to wade through legal decisions to find the decisive nuggets within. Emily’s well-practised writing skills go into drafting the creative and compelling arguments that make the difference before arbitrators and tribunals.
Emily attended law school at Western University. During law school, Emily volunteered with Unifor, helping local reps with upcoming arbitrations, as well as attending mediations and collective bargaining. They also participated in the National Labour Arbitration Competition, both as a mooter and as a coach. They graduated in the top 10% of their class and joined Goldblatt Partners after articling at the firm.
In their spare time, Emily can often be found in their giant red gamer chair (which can also occasionally be glimpsed over Zoom calls and hearings), playing the nerdiest possible video games. They also enjoy reading fiction and exploring all of the dessert places Toronto has to offer.
