Biography

Mark Rowlinson advances the interests of workers in his international law, trade law and labour law practice. He also advocates in the area of climate and the environment.

Mark joined the firm after a 26-year career with one of Canada’s largest private sector trade unions. He has decades of experience in litigating a wide variety of labour law cases before labour boards, arbitrators and in the courts across Canada. He has also litigated labour cases under Canada’s trade agreements and developed and led union and worker involvement in important trade cases.

Climate and environmental work are a developing area in Mark’s practice. For ten years, he was the President of Blue Green Canada, an alliance of Canadian labour unions and environmental organizations. He was also a member of the Federal Government’s Just Transition Task Force in 2018. Along with other members of the firm’s public interest litigation team, he will be developing legal strategies in a range of areas, including climate change.

Mark has also focused on advancing responsible mining practices, serving for six years as a board member of the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance.

Outside the office, Mark is a board member of Blue Green Canada, the clean growth expert panel of the Canadian Institute for Climate Choices and the Technical Committee of Climate Engagement Canada. He is a long-time member of the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers and is recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada as a leading practitioner in labour and employment law. Another fun fact – Mark articled with the firm many, many moons ago.
