Biography
Fatima Aamir (she/her) supports workers in provincial trade unions in both the public and private sectors, including assisting construction trade unions in private arbitrations and at Ontario Labour Relations Board.
Fatima began law school with a distrust of the law and its ability to obtain transformative change, having seen marginalized individuals more often hurt than helped by the legal system. This cautious optimism and acute sensitivity to power dynamics guides Fatima’s approach to her clients. Attentive, empathetic and candid, Fatima is committed to breaking down the complexity of legal proceedings, listening to what really drives client and grievor concerns, and working creatively and collaboratively towards their desired goals.
At a young age, Fatima fell in love with the power of language and stories. Prior to law school, Fatima completed her Masters in Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto, where she researched post-colonial modernisms and liberation movements and published her first academic article in the Journal of Palestine studies, Palestinian Modernism: Meaning Making and Alternative Historical Practices in Adania Shibli’s “Minor Detail.” Fatima continues her cultural and literary criticism today, regularly contributing to publications such as Public Parking, Canthius, Arc Poetry, and Azeema Magazine, among others.
Fatima graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where she received Distinction in her second year. She advocated tirelessly on behalf of refugees as co-chair of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers – UofT Chapter and Caseworker at Downtown Legal Services in the Immigration and Refugee Law division. During this time, she supported the Canadian Council for Refugees in systemic litigation at the Federal Court and Supreme Court of Canada, including intervening in R v. Mason at the SCC. Fatima also spent a summer at the Community Justice Collective, where she provided legal support for community organizers and social justice movements across the GTA.
Following her call to the bar in 2025, Fatima joined Goldblatt Partners as an associate after articling with the firm. Outside of work, Fatima can be found cooking from a new cookbook she found while camped out at the Toronto Reference Library, attending underground music events across the city, and endlessly brushing her long-haired, high-maintenance Persian-Himalayan cat, Salem.
