Newsflash! LAO agrees to bargain & Frank Addario wins a medal

August 24, 2016

Here are two short news reports you may finding interesting:

Legal Aid agrees to bargain with lawyers’ chosen union

Legal Aid Ontario has backed away from its refusal to bargain with the Society of Energy Professionals. As reported by the Canadian Labour Reporter, LAO has agreed “to discuss recognition of The Society as bargaining agent for Legal Aid lawyers, and to establish a framework for collective bargaining.” This means there is hope the parties will not have to square off in court later this year. Steven Barrett represents the Society of Energy Professionals.

Frank Addario wins the 2016 G. Arthur Martin Criminal Justice Medal

Our former partner, Frank Addario, has won the G. Arthur Martin Criminal Justice Medal for lifetime achievement in criminal law.  Frank is the second lawyer with a Goldblatt Partners connection to receive this honour – Marlys Edwardh received the medal in 2002.  The Criminal Lawyers’ Association says:

A fixture at all levels of trial and appellate courts for the past four decades, Mr. Addario commands enormous respect across the justice system for his exquisite courtroom skills, his encyclopedic knowledge of criminal law and his sense of fair play. Mr. Addario is also renowned as a tireless leader of the defence bar and a mentor of young lawyers.

The medal will be presented to Frank in October.  Congratulations Frank!
