Above the Law? Steven Barrett on Bill 5 and constitutional rights
Steven Barrett talks about the Bill 5 litigation and constitutional law
The David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights at the University of Toronto recently held a panel discussion on the constitutional challenge to the proposed Better Local Government Act (Bill 5) and the Ford Government’s threatened use of the notwithstanding clause following the decision of the Superior Court of Justice finding that Bill 5 violated s. 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The panel discussion, which took place just after the Court of Appeal granted the provincial government a stay of the Superior Court’s decision, was livestreamed, and is now available on You Tube for any law nerds who may have missed it.
Steven’s segment begins at about minute 48.50 into the discussion (But check out the introduction in which the executive director of the David Asper Centre, Cheryl Milne, gives a shout out to Louis Century and Geetha Philipupillai).
