Remembering Marlys Edwardh

It is with profound sadness that we remember our colleague and friend, Marlys Edwardh who passed away on July 14, 2026.
We had the great fortune of welcoming Marlys to our partnership at Goldblatt Partners in 2011, where she worked with us until her retirement in 2018.
Those of us who worked alongside Marlys will remember not only her brilliance as an advocate, but her mentorship, her fierce integrity, and her unwavering belief that the law exists to protect the vulnerable.
Marlys was, quite simply, one of the most accomplished lawyers and advocates of her generation. Marlys was also one of the first women to prominently practise criminal law in Canada and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2010.
Marlys’s many groundbreaking cases are truly too extensive to list, but a few notable examples of her tremendous body of work include fighting to overturn the wrongful convictions of Guy Paul Morin and Steven Truscott, working on the commission of inquiry into the wrongful conviction of Donald Marshall Jr., representing Maher Arar before the commission of inquiry into his rendition and torture, representing Hassan Diab in his extradition saga, serving as Commission Counsel to the Krever Inquiry into Canada’s blood system, and representing people with mental illnesses in the criminal justice system.
Marlys truly leaves behind a legacy few lawyers will ever match. We were so very privileged to call her a partner, and our colleague and friend.
