Kim Stanton on reconciliation and responsibilities
Kim Stanton will be part of a panel discussion on Reconciliation and Responsibilities: A Primer for Non-Indigenous Lawyers at the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers’ annual conference.
The panel will provide historical context for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action as a framework for a discussion about how non-Indigenous lawyers can, and should, play a role in realizing the goal of reconciliation through their day to day practice and broader professional activities. How to cultivate the knowledge and self-awareness to become effective actors in the struggle against continuing colonialism will be examined through concrete examples. The premise of the panel is that non-Indigenous people should be willing, and prepared, to take up the “heavy lifting” of reconciliation, and the panelists will situate the role of law and lawyers in that endeavour.
