Constitutional Roundtable on City of Toronto et al v Ontario
Geetha Philipupillai participated in an Asper Centre Constitutional Roundtable on the Supreme Court’s decision in City of Toronto v. Ontario.
That case challenged the Ford government’s interference in the municipal election in 2018 when, in the middle of the election, it announced it was reducing the number of City wards and councillors from 47 to 25 and effectively double the ward populations. Although the Ontario Superior Court overturned Bill 5, which authorized the provincial government’s actions, the Court of Appeal and a majority of the Supreme Court of Canada ultimately held that Bill 5 was constitutional.
